After a flurry of activity late in the window, only time will tell whether Daniel Farke’s Leeds United side is stronger, weaker, or about the same.

The departures of creative lynchpin Georginio Rutter, teen sensation Archie Gray and Championship Player of the Year Crysencio Summerville obviously hit the Yorkshire giants hard.

And, with the possible exception of Tottenham Hotspur loanee and former Fulham winger Manor Solomon, those who arrived at Elland Road to help replenish Farke’s stocks are pretty much unknown quantities.

£10 million winger Largie Ramazani came through Manchester United’s academy but did not make a single appearance before swapping the Red Devils for Almeria. Japan international Ao Tanaka arrives from Germany’s second tier.

And Isaac Schmidt, the Leeds’ deadline day arrival after Tanaka, will have had the Whites faithful rushing into Wikipedia to clue themselves up on the club’s new number 33.

Leeds United sign Isaac Schmidt and Ao Tanaka on deadlone day

The former Switzerland youth international joins Leeds from St Gallen, reportedly for a fee of £2.5 million.

The hope will be, of course, that 24-year-old Schmidt can do what so few have managed to in the modern era and establish himself as a reliable, competent and well-rounded left-sided full-back, with the eternally-divisive Junior Firpo the current incumbant.

Unlike Tanaka, Schmidt did not arrive soon enough on deadline day to be included in Leeds’ squad for Saturday’s Championship clash with Hull City.

But the diminutive wideman does arrive in excellent nick. He mustered four goals or assists in St Gallen’s first nine games of the new campaign, overtaking his G/A tally from the whole of 2023/24 along the way.

“Of course, we are saddened by Isaac’s departure so close to the end of the transfer window,” St Gallen sporting director Roger Stilz tells the club’s official website, feeling that it would have bene unfair to stand in Schmidt’s way.

“This move to England is a great opportunity for him. Most importantly, Isaac has earned this move with his performance and commitment.

“We would like to thank him for his great commitment to the Green Whites.”

Matthias Huppi, St Gallen’s president, believes that Schmidt’s move to Leeds United is a historic moment for the for the two-time Swiss Super League champions, due to the sheer size of the fee heading their way.

“In financial terms, this is probably the most significant transfer in the history of our club,” Huppi says. “We wish Isaac all the best for his new challenge.”

Daniel Farke hopes Elland Road exits can be offset by signings

Schmidt will likely battle Firpo for the title of Leeds’ first-choice left-back.

Ramazani and Solomon, meanwhile, will hope to offset the departures of Summerville and Rutter. The attacking duo scored or created 55 goals between them last season for the beaten Championship play-off finalists.

Tanaka, meanwhile, should bring drive, thrust and a goal threat to a Leeds midfield that was a little one-paced and passive during Farke’s debut season at the helm.

“Ao told us a long time ago that he wanted to move. This opportunity has now arisen at short notice,” Dusseldorf chief Klaus Allofs tells the club’s website. “We had to weigh up his sporting value very carefully against the financial framework.

“It is no secret that we would have liked to continue working with Ao. He helped shape our game, successfully represented Fortuna at a World Cup and increased our profile in Japan.

“We can describe his commitment and his time here in Dusseldorf as very valuable for Fortuna.”
