Southampton goalkeeper Stuart Taylor has given a fascinating insight into his career as a back-up goalkeeper in an interview with the New York Times.

Taylor has played for 12 clubs during his career but has only amassed 95 club appearances in total.

He is currently third choice at Southampton, signing for the club in 2016 after a year out of football.

Taylor had been at Leeds United prior to that, and making five appearances for them in the 2014/15 season, conceding six goals.

Upon his release, Taylor came close to quitting the game altogether, turning down offers from lower league clubs.

He said: “You go round thinking things will happen, that surely you will get games, and it becomes very demoralising, I was fed up.

“People will say I am wrong, but I wanted to play at the highest level I thought I could play at. I felt I was good enough to be in the Premier League.”

Taylor began his career with Arsenal, and was an England under-21 international.

He signed with Premier League side Southampton in 2016, although is still yet to play for them.

His last professional game saw him keep a clean sheet, in Leeds 0-0 draw against Rotherham in 2015, Neil Redfearn’s final match in charge.
