Premier League star wants to sink Leeds yet again

This is Leeds United’s first season back in the Premier League for 16 years.

But it might’ve been their second if not for a certain Chris Basham.

Back in March of 2019, Basham scored the only goal of the game as Sheffield United beat their Yorkshire rivals 1-0 at Elland Road.

It was a massive blow for Leeds, who were leapfrogged by the Blades in the second automatic promotion spot with only eight games to go that day.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side only won three of those last eight matches, consigning themselves to a spot in the playoffs, which they were eliminated from by Derby County.

Basham’s goal offset a dismal run of form at the worst possible time and the 32-year-old has admitted to SUTV that he’d quite like to score the winner in another Yorkshire clash with Leeds, ahead of Sunday’s fixture at Bramall Lane.

He said: “Yorkshire derby, we have seen how good Leeds have been since they have come into the Premier League. So, it is a big game for us and it is an opportunity for us to take in a Yorkshire derby. And obviously I have been there and hopefully I can do what I did last time.”

Leeds might well be favourites to win this one.

Chris Wilder’s side have lost all three of their games this season – two in the Premier League – and Leeds, with a 4-3 win against Fulham and a 4-3 defeat by champions Liverpool under their belts so far, may just fancy their chances.

It wouldn’t quite be revenge, but it would perhaps exorcise some demons.
