The 27-year-old would be a phenomenal buy for Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers – and they’re among the favourites.

By virtue of the fact Rangers’ best two strikers are a 37-year-old and a Colombian starlet with three Scottish Premiership games under his belt, you could argue that manager Pedro Caixinha should be smart and bring in somebody else before the window shuts next week.

In their defence, Kenny Miller remains an excellent forward option, despite his advancing years, and Alfredo Morelos, who has three goals in four games, has shown the adoring Rangers fans just how he managed to score 40 times in 54 games for Finnish side HFK Helsinki.

But it’s still early days for Morelos and the smart move for Caixinha is to bring in another hitman before it’s too late. With Morelos just beginning his career and Miller being in the twilight of his, the Gers need somebody at the peak of their powers – and Nahki Wells is.

According to bookmakers Bet Victor, Rangers are 6/1 second favourites to sign the 27-year-old striker, who has 27 Championship goals over the past two seasons with Huddersfield Town, who appear to have deemed him surplus to requirements.

He would be an outstanding signing by Caixinha. Given his history in League One and the Championship, Wells is somebody who could easily be as influential for the Ibrox club as Leigh Griffiths or Moussa Dembele are for Old Firm enemies Celtic.

Going by the odds, Rangers are in the reckoning, even though it seems unlikely that he would snub the promise of plenty of Championship offers to join Caixinha in Glasgow.

Still, if the 46-year-old can’t get him then he should be looking at players of the same profile: proven down South in England’s lesser divisions and in the peak of their careers.
