The West Ham United striker won the January goal of the month award, ahead of Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud.

Gunners striker Olivier Giroud spoke exclusively to French media outlet Le Journal du Dimanche, and explained why he believes that his ‘special’ goal against Crystal Palace in January was better than Andy Carroll’s wonder strike, and how he feels hard done by that he did not win the goal of the month award.

The two strikers have similar styles of play, in that they are renowned for their strength and aerial ability, but their skill and technical ability often goes under the radar.

They both showcased that incredible talent with their wonder strikes in January, both against Crystal Palace, but the Hammers hitman took the spoils, with his goal being voted goal of the month.

But Giroud explained why he should have won the award, when speaking exclusively to Le Journal du Dimanche:

“I don’t want to big myself up, but goals like mine leave a mark on history because they’re rare. There’s been PSG striker Charles Edouard Coridon and Zlatan Ibrahimovic before me. Carroll’s goal is magnificent, but maybe people won’t remember it in two years’ time. Mine, yes. It’s like Zlatan’s improbable overhead kick against England or Van Basten’s volley, goals I would have liked to score.”

The 30-year-old French international has once again been the target of the Emirates boo boys this season, but from outside looking in, it seems as though he gets a raw deal.

He has scored 12 goals in 28 appearances in all competitions for Arsene Wenger’s men this term, with most of those outings coming from the substitutes bench. He has also chipped in with four assists.

And he most certainly provides the Gunners with a different option, when they need to mix things up.

He is also capable of producing the extraordinary. Unfortunately for him though, the piece of magic he pulled out of the bag on January 1st was not quite good enough, as far as the Premier League’s goal of the month panel were concerned.
