The Telegraph claim that Manchester United have decided they will take a look at midfielder James Garner in the summer with a view to introducing him into the first team – amid reports Leeds United are interested in him.

Garner, 21, has been superb for Nottingham Forest over the past 18 months. Joining the Championship side on loan in January 2021, he has clocked up 57 appearances – having a hand in 13 goals from the middle of the park.

While he is not in the side to score or create, Garner has still had an impact in the final third. His athleticism, work rate and passing have really come to the fore while on loan at the City Ground. Leeds are interested in Garner.

Phil Hay confirmed on The Athletic that Leeds are looking at Garner. But a report from the Telegraph states that instead of selling or finding another loan this summer, Manchester United will look at Garner in pre-season.

Manchester United decision on Garner: Leeds move would be ideal

Putting rivalry aside, Garner would be ideal for Leeds – and Leeds would be perfect for Garner. Realistically, even if Manchester United do decide to give Garner a chance – he is not going to be a regular, 20 appearances at most.

A loan to a Premier League club would benefit him enormously, similarly to Conor Gallagher at Crystal Palace – after he himself impressed in the Championship. Leeds would be perfect, because chances are he would start.

Leeds play in a way where they require their players to be well-versed technically – and Roy Keane recently told ITV Garner is just that: “He’s very good technically and he likes to dictate the play.”
