Former England international Darren Bent believes Tottenham Hotspur would be the best destination for Jordan Pickford especially if Everton cannot survive the Premier League drop this season.

Just how important will that penalty save be by the end of May?

The Toffees left it late to dodge the drop last term and will need another eleventh hour escape this time around; stopping the bomb with just one second left on the timer.

Pickford’s dramatic save to keep out a James Maddison spot-kick on the stroke of half-time at the King Power Stadium on Monday night denied Leicester the chance to go 3-1 up shortly before Alex Iwobi claimed a share of the spoils.

And with Dominic Calvert-Lewin missing most of the current campaign, Pickford’s fine form at the other end has taken on even more importance. That the Toffees are only one point adrift of safety – with four games remaining – is largely a by-product of Pickford’s sometimes virtuoso displays between the sticks.

Could Tottenham Hotspur sign Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford?

The former Sunderland ‘stopper told talkSPORT in November that he feels he is in the ‘most consistent form’ of his career.

And if Pickford cannot save Everton’s skin, Bent would be happy to see Gareth Southgate’s number one follow in his footsteps in North London.

“That’s the place I think he should go. I think Spurs for me is the one that makes the most sense,” Bent tells talkSPORT (2 May, 4pm).

Hugo Lloris is now 36. Spurs back-up Fraser Forster not much younger either. So a new number one is likely to be high on the wishlist of Tottenham’s next manager. Whoever that may be.

Bent believes that Pickford’s cat-like reflexes, as well as his impressive distribution, is likely to earn the 29-year-old plenty of admirers, with Manchester United another in the market for a more ‘modern’ goalkeeper.

“United are looking at (Brentford’s) David Raya,” Bent adds. “Pickford (is also) very good with his feet. He is a good goalkeeper. A modern day goalkeeper, cause he is good with his feet.”

Pickford signed a new four-and-a-half year deal at Goodison Park in February. Bent, however, feels £40 million may be enough if Sean Dyche cannot keep Everton heads above water.
