Match to be played on Saturday 3rd May 2014 at 15:00. Venue: Old Trafford, Manchester.
Ryan Giggs wouldn’t have had to do much to motivate his players this week following Manchester United’s crushing win against Norwich City at Old Trafford last weekend.
Next up for United is a difficult game against Sunderland who played well against United earlier in the season in the League Cup, which was a major mark of embarrassment for former boss David Moyes.
Here’s the side Giggs could go with.
GK – David De Gea
There’s no need to change De Gea as the club’s number one. He’ll be determined to put in a good performance to improve his chances of starting for Spain at the World Cup.
RB – Chris Smalling
Giggs may want some extra pace in the middle of his defence, which means Smalling down the right and Phil Jones moving into the middle.
CB – Phil Jones
Jones is likely to be a starting centre-back for United for several years. He played well down the right against Norwich but could move back into a central role for this game.
CB – Nemanja Vidic
Giggs will be respectful of what Vidic has done for the club so he should ensure the Serbian gets a chance to play in front of his home fans for as long as possible before his exit.
LB – Patrice Evra
The Frenchman has shown this season that he can still be a very effective left-back for the club. He keeps his place.
RM – Antonio Valencia
Valencia guarantees pace down the right hand side and he also offers extra protection to the right-back.
CM – Michael Carrick
Carrick has been relatively consistent this season and his stats have been impressive. He’ll control the space in front of United’s back four.
CM – Juan Mata
It would be harsh of Giggs not to start Mata after he came off the bench against Norwich to bag a brace and take the game away from the Canaries.
LM – Shinji Kagawa
There’s ongoing speculation over Kagawa’s future at Old Trafford but he seems to be a player that Giggs likes and admires. He can control possession well on the left.
ST – Danny Welbeck
Welbeck is a good option to have ain attack because he’s capable of drifting over to the left hand side if Kagawa comes under pressure from someone like Adam Johnson.
ST – Wayne Rooney
Rooney is showing no signs of that toe injury and also bagged a brace last weekend so it would be an amazing decision if he doesn’t start this game.
