Liverpool will be sky high heading into this weekend’s game against West Ham United as they sit pretty at the top of the Premier League.
Brendan Rodgers’ side are staring at the very realistic possibility of a Premier League title win, which would be their first league crown since the 1989/1990 season.
As has been common this season, Rodgers’ men have had extra time to rest which leaves the boss with questions over whether he wants to stick with the same side which turned over Tottenham or to make changes.
Here’s the side he could go with.
GK – Simon Mignolet
The Belgian shot stopper will continue in goal. He’s responded superbly to the string of errors he produced since the start of the year.
RB – Glen Johnson
Recently put back in his natural position by Brendan Rodgers and he hasn’t disappointed. Gets forward well and does basic defensive duties professionally.
CB – Martin Skrtel
Skrtel injects a no nonsense attitude into the back four. He doesn’t try and defend with a pretty style and just gets the job done.
CB – Daniel Agger
The Dane had been under pressure following some inconsistent defensive displays. However, he was solid against Spurs last weekend and will most likely keep his place.
LB – Jon Flanagan
Arguably Liverpool’s standout player this season. He’s progressed to a point where he’s now a priceless member of the back four.
RM – Raheem Sterling
Pace will be everything, especially when West Ham loan Liverpool’s penalty area looking to hurt them with aerial balls. Sterling is someone who can counter attack quickly.
CM – Jordan Henderson
Henderson has been a very consistent player in Liverpool’s midfield. He can cover different roles in both defence and attack.
CM – Steven Gerrard
Gerrard has produced the form commonly associated with him over the course of the season. He’s playing out of his skin at the moment and providing real leadership and inspiration.
LM – Philippe Coutinho
The playmaker may be listed in a left midfield role but he won’t stay there. He’s at his best when he’s in behind the two strikers and will move in centrally when Liverpool get on top.
ST – Daniel Sturridge
Sturridge is the striker who will make the sacrifices in the Liverpool attack. He’ll drift to either side when width is needed but he’s at his best when he’s through the middle, causing chaos in the back four.
ST – Luis Suarez
Suarez is the sort of player who stands a good chance of just scoring in every single game. All Liverpool need to do is get the ball to him and things will start to happen.
