Here’s Liverpool’s possible side for next season based on current players and potential signings.
Liverpool’s key stars appeared to be in good spirits as they returned to pre-season training but the hard work for this summer is far from being finished.
The Reds remain active in several places on the transfer market, as Brendan Rodgers looks to sign players who will move his team forward ahead of the new Premier League season and a Champions League campaign.
Here’s how the side could look for the first game against Southampton.
GK – Simon Mignolet
Mignolet will be better off for having a season at the club under his belt. Rodgers seems ready to make him number one for as long as he’s at the club.
RB – Jon Flanagan
Arguably the most improved player over the course of last season. He starts ahead of Glen Johnson.
CB – Martin Skrtel
Skrtel is a leader in the back four and someone who keeps the defence well organised under pressure.
CB – Mamadou Sakho
Sakho was inconsistent during his first season at the club but he provides presence and an ability to play out from the defence.
LB – Marcos Rojo
Rojo had a great game to help Argentina into the World Cup final. It will be interesting to see if Rodgers switches his attention away from Alberto Moreno of Sevilla.
RM – Raheem Sterling
The England winger was one of the most impressive players for Roy Hodgson’s side in Brazil. His pace can hurt any team.
CM – Jordan Henderson
Henderson is the versatile player in the middle of the team who will fill in when someone in the heart of the side gets caught out of position.
CM – Steven Gerrard
Gerrard is the captain and a midfielder who can drop off and play a deep role as well as nudging further forward.
AM – Philippe Coutinho
Coutinho seemed to be in good shape as he returned for pre-season training and he should slot in behind the main striker.
LM – Lazar Markovic
A deal for Markovic is thought to be imminent. He stands a great chance of starting on the left if the deal with Benfica goes through.
ST – Daniel Sturridge
Sturridge has to quickly adjust to knowing that he’ll be the main striker at the club next season, with Luis Suarez likely to join Barcelona.
