Everton face a difficult trip to White Hart Lane this weekend as Roberto Martinez looks for his team to build on their win against Aston Villa last weekend.

Everton have responded superbly to the humiliation they were dealt in the Merseyside derby and they remain in a good position for an attack on the top four by the end of the season.

Here’s the side Martinez could go with to face Spurs.

GK – Tim Howard

The experienced American will be in goal. He commands his defence well and ensures there is no lazy attitude in his back four.

RB – Seamus Coleman

Martinez confirmed earlier this week that Coleman was in line for a return and he should go straight back into the team. He’ll make the defence a tighter unit while adding something extra going forward.

CB – Phil Jagielka

Jagielka is the heart of the Everton back four. He’ll keep the defensive unit well organised in the face of some high pressing and high pressure attacking play from Spurs.

CB – Sylvain Distin

Distin provides presence and strength to the back four. He’ll remove the aerial threat from Tottenham’s play and will match up well against Emmanuel Adebayor.

LB – Leighton Baines

Baines ability to play well defensively and going forward doesn’t need to be sold. He’s one of the most reliable players the club has and needs a good performance to keep Aaron Lennon quiet.

RM – Aiden McGeady

Has looked a touch rusty after coming back into British football but he should keep his place at right midfield. He has the pace to exploit Tottenham on the counter attack over the top.

CM – Gareth Barry

Barry will probably sit as the deepest of the midfielders. He can roam the space in front of the back four, looking to make interceptions and tackles to stop Spurs building any fluency.

CM – James McCarthy

Seems to be really growing into a strong midfield man for Everton. He’s got great composure and links the defence and midfield, midfield and attack together well.

AM – Ross Barkley

Barkley is one of the most exciting English midfielders around. He’s capable of taking Tottenham apart during this game if Everton can get possession to him quickly and effectively.

LM – Kevin Mirallas

Mirallas has been very consistent for Everton this season. He’s been playing centrally but Martinez could ask him to adopt a familiar left midfield role for this game, drifting into the middle when he gets the chance.

ST – Steven Naismith

With Romelu Lukaku and Lacina Traore both injured, this game could see the 27-year-old get a chance to lead the attack. He should be very determined to cause chaos in the Tottenham back four, getting into good positions and creating space.
