The former Liverpool player is Everton’s new assistant manager.
A Liverpool legends event, which was scheduled to take place on the eve of next Sunday’s derby against Everton, has been postponed hours after Sammy Lee’s appointment as Toffees number two.
The Event With Legends Twitter account confirmed that all tickets for ‘An Evening With Sammy Lee’ will be refunded in due course’, although it did not specify the reason why.
A product of Liverpool’s youth system, Lee helped the Reds win nine major trophies between 1976 and 1986 and returned to Anfield as assistant to Rafa Benitez nine years ago.
As a result, the 58-year-old has found himself far from popular within the city’s blue half, and many Everton supporters have already expressed their concerns regarding his arrival at Goodison Park.
Lee – who worked alongside Sam Allardyce, the new Everton manager, at Bolton Wanderers – was previously courted by Ronald Koeman, the 63-year-old’s predecessor.
However, Koeman later admitted in an interview with De Telegraaf that it would have been “difficult to take him to Everton”.
Craig Shakespeare, the former Leicester City manager, has also arrived at Goodison Park as first team coach.
