Arsenal legend Tony Adams has questioned Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger’s tactical balance between attack and defence in an interview with ESPN FC.

The former Gunners captain, who made over 500 league appearances during a nineteen year career at the club, did however praise his former boss for his financial principles.

Adams, who is now Sport Director at Chinese Super League club Chongqing Lifan FC, turned down the chance to join his former club in a coaching capacity last month.

The former England captain was offered the chance to help coach the Gunners under 18 side, but instead chose the more lucrative offer of a move to China, as described by ESPN.

But the lifelong Gooner still has his own thoughts on how the club is doing, and he praised Wenger’s sound financial discipline, but questioned his tactics.

“We have a lot of players to come back in, and it was a good point last weekend away to the reigning champions,” Adams said.

“As for the match against Liverpool, you always do get some funny results in the first game of the new season.

“I admire Arsene for sticking to his financial principles, although I wish tactically he could get the balance right between defence and attack,”

Arsenal are thought to be close to a double Spanish swoop of Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi and Deportivo La Coruna forward Lucas Perez, according to BBC Sport.

The Gunners are currently enduring another injury crisis, this time at the heart of their defence, and Arsenal fans have been crying out for Wenger to sign a more experienced defender in what has become a problem position.

This was ruthlessly exposed by Liverpool on the opening day of the season, who managed to score four times at the Emirates against the unfamiliar pairing of Rob Holding and Calum Chambers at centre back.

Arsenal fans will be hoping that the expected arrival of Mustafi, however, will go someway to addressing Wenger’s tactical imbalance that Adams was describing.
