Name alone will not encourage the Celtic boss to land a marquee player

Brendan Rodgers has said that he will not sign a player purely based on his name, casting doubt over Celtic’s rumoured interest in Bastian Schweinsteiger, the Glasgow Evening Times reports.

The Bhoys had been linked with a move for the Manchester United outcast should they reach the Champions League proper, as outlined here by the Scotsman, after the German was immediately frozen out by new Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho.

Schweinsteiger, now 32, made 8 shy of 350 league appearances for former club Bayern Munich before joining Louis van Gaal’s United, but has yet to show some of the form that helped Bayern to 8 league titles during his time at the Allianz, and his country to a World Cup.

And Celtic manager Rodgers has cast doubt over such rumours in marquee names, saying a name alone will not merit a switch to Parkhead.

“I don’t need a marquee signing that can’t run,” Rodgers told reporters including the Glasgow Evening Times.

“It doesn’t have to be a marquee signing. I think we have brought in some really top talents who have come in and excited the supporters.

“I can get you a marquee signing but they’ve got to be able to press and they’ve got to be able to run.

“For me it’s never been about the name. But of course if the name is big and he can play, then great, but for me it’s about having the right profile of player who can come in.”

Celtic huddle up before the gameCeltic are looking to retain the Scottish Premiership title and make the Champions League proper

Celtic kept pace with Rangers after a 4-2 win at St Johnstone on Saturday.

The Bhoys were 3-0 up at half-time against the Saints, but had to stave off an unlikely comeback when the Perth based side snatched two late goals to come within just one strike of the Scottish champions, only for Ryan Christie to kill the game dead in stoppage time.
