The Black Cats have beaten competition from Watford to land the full-back on temporary basis with an option to buy
Manquillo, left, is expected to seal a loan move to Sunderland
Atletico Madrid full-back Javier Manquillo will travel to Sunderland today to have a medical ahead of a proposed move to Wearside, Mundo Deportivo report.
The Spanish Under-21 international has chosen to join David Moyes’ side ahead of Premier League rivals Watford, who were also thought to be in the running.
The Black Cats and Los Colchoneros have agreed a loan deal for Manquillo, which includes an option to buy clause, with a permanent deal not agreed due to the proximity of the end of the transfer window, Mundo report.
Javier Manquillo
This will be the second time 22 year-old Manquillo will appear in the English top flight, having joined Liverpool on loan in 2014 under the stewardship of Brendan Rodgers.
The Spaniard made 10 league appearances under the now-Celtic boss, but he found his loan spell cut short after he was frozen out from the first team set-up after Christmas, and Atletico terminated his deal due to lack of first-team appearances.

This will be the Atletico academy graduate’s third loan move in three years, having also gone on loan to Ligue Un side Marseille, where he made 31 league appearances during a difficult campaign for the French club.
For David Moyes, Manquillo’s arrival will be a significant boost as injuries continue to mount at the back, with John O’Shea the latest to move into the physio room at the Stadium of Light after sustaining a groin injury against Middlesbrough on Sunday.

The Spaniard will provide competition for young Donald Love at right back, who has also only recently joined the club, hailing from Moyes’ former stomping ground at Manchester United.
