Speaking to the Northern Echo, Newcastle poacher Dwight Gayle has praised his side’s squad depth ahead of the return of fellow striker Aleksandar Mitrovic from suspension.

Dwight Gayle is currently the club’s leading goalscorer with four goals from four games in the Championship, including a brace against Reading in Newcastle’s 4-1 win.

He has since scored in the Magpies’ last three matches, and it was his goal that was the difference at Ashton Gate over the weekend as the Toon recorded their second win of the campaign.

But with the return of Serbian forward Mitrovic imminent after suspension, the former Crystal Palace striker is not concerned about competition for his place, rather choosing to praise the squad depth that Rafa Benitez has at his disposal.

“Mitro’s coming back on Tuesday (when Newcastle host Cheltenham in the EFL Cup), so hopefully he can come in and work hard with me as well up front,” said Gayle.

“We’ve got great depth in the squad at the moment. We’ve got Ayoze (Perez), (Mo) Diame, Mitro and (Adam) Armstrong.

“We’ve got five strikers, and we’re all going to be working hard. If we’re not playing well, we’re going to swap it around, but it’s great to have that for the team.”

Mitrovic is set to return to the Newcastle fold after a four match banned coming after his second sending off of the season last term, when he was dismissed for an unsavoury challenge on Kyle Walker of Spurs on the last day of the campaign.

Mitrovic, despite his disciplinary concerns, did show signs of quality up front following his move from Anderlecht, and his return of 9 goals in 34 league appearances hints that he could well become an important player for the Toon Army in their quest to return to the top flight.
