Gus Poyet has outlined on Sky Sports the advantage Aston Villa and West Ham United have over Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur in the race for the top four.

The former Tottenham midfielder is surprised that Arsenal and Spurs are below the likes of Villa and West Ham in the Premier League table at the moment.

Poyet has added that with no European football this season, the Villans and the Hammers have an advantage over Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal and Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham.

The former Sunderland manager said on Sky Sports: “For Spurs and Arsenal to have four teams ahead of them that are not the normal ones in the top six, Aston Villa, West Ham, Everton and Leicester, is a big problem for them because these teams they keep winning, they keep doing well they don’t have the pressure, they keep going and they are not playing in European competitions, West Ham, Aston Villa, so they are teams that can really concentre in the league.”

Can Aston Villa and West Ham United end up in the top four?

West Ham beat Tottenham at the weekend and are actually fourth in the Premier League table at the moment.

As for Villa, Dean Smith’s side are currently eighth in the standings, but they have two games in hand.

If the Villans win both of them, then they will be just a point behind Chelsea and only three points behind the Hammers.

While Arsenal and Tottenham are not doing exactly great right now and also have Europa League football to contend with, the Gunners and Spurs should not be written off just yet.

After all, there is still a lot of football to be played between now and the end of the season.
