It has been an up and down season for Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings, who was being compared to Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk at the start of the campaign and is now being linked with a move to Everton.
The Sunday Mirror (12/7; page 69) recently claimed that Everton are battling Manchester United to sign Villa’s powerhouse this summer.
More than likely, Villa will drop back into the Championship by next week, which would increase the chances of someone like Everton being able to secure Mings’ services.
At the start of the campaign, Mings was being compared to Van Dijk, who he stated that he wants to ’emulate’ and labelled as a ‘complete’ defender, as he told the Birmingham Mail.
Whilst Mings started the season in a positive fashion, it has been a tough campaign for the former Bournemouth player, who earned his maiden England call towards the back end of 2019.
There’s no doubt that Everton need to add at least one centre-back to their squad for next season, but is Mings the answer?
Villa have struggled for large parts of the season, especially from a defensive standpoint, but that doesn’t mean that Mings isn’t good enough for a club like Everton.
The centre-backs at Villa haven’t been the biggest problem this season. It’s more down to a lack of experience in the squad, tactics, a midfield that has struggled for large parts of the campaign, and full-backs who simply haven’t done enough to stop attacks coming from the wide areas.
Saying that, for the Toffees supporters, it would be underwhelming for them if they were to sign Mings given that Carlo Ancelotti has the pulling power to bring in even bigger names to Goodison Park.
And whilst Mings wants to ’emulate’ Van Dijk, and was being compared to him, he still has a lot to learn because this campaign has been an eye-opener for him.
