Hertha Berlin have completed the signing of Jhon Cordoba, beating Wolverhampton Wanderers and Everton to the signature of a ‘powerful, dynamic and assertive’ centre-forward.
The capital club have endured more false dawns than most in German football.
But, with their new American investors spending big and thinking bigger in the transfer market, there is a growing sense of optimism abounding at the Olimpiastadion these days.
Hertha have paid huge sums to sign Lucas Tousart, Matheus Cunha and former AC Milan number nine Krzysztof Piatek since the turn of the year while Alexander Schwollow, one of the finest shot-stoppers in the country, has arrived from Freiburg.
And if Bruno Labbadia’s side are to push towards the European places after a mid-table finish last term, the £14 million addition of Cordoba should add a ruthless streak in attack after a career-best 2019/20 campaign at Cologne.
“Jhon has already proven himself in the Bundesliga and in addition to his goal threat, he brings the attributes that we are looking for in attack: he is powerful, dynamic and assertive,” says general manager Michael Preetz of a journeyman forward who’s 14 goals saved Cologne from relegation.
“I’m very pleased to be able to run out for Hertha BSC,” Cordoba himself says.
“I am very sure of the potential of this club and want to show my quality as fast as possible here.”
BILD reported as recently as Saturday that Everton had identified the former Malaga man as an option to ease the goalscoring burden on Dominic Calvert-Lewin in attack, while the Express in August named Wolves among the Colombian’s many suitors.
Cologne have since announced the arrival of Sebastian Andersson, Union Berlin’s 6ft 3ins target man who netted seven headed goals last season, as Cordoba’s replacement.
