Stuart Pearce has called James Milner the greatest pound for pound player to have ever played in the Premier League.

On Friday, Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the Liverpool midfielder was set to join Brighton & Hove Albion on a free transfer.

As James Milner is set to call it a day on his time at Anfield, Stuart Pearce has said that he is the greatest pound for pound player in Premier League history.

Stuart Pearce calls James Milner the greatest Premier League player ever

Currently, in such an all-time discussion, names such as Thierry Henry, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney are some of the names to potentially be discussed the most amongst several other.

Milner, despite his glittering career in the English top-flight is unlikely to be named by a majority of fans and pundits alike.

However, Stuart Pearce has backed James Milner to be the greatest pound for pound player in Premier League history.

“Pound for pound, he is the best player in the Premier League there’s ever been. I’d stick by that. For what you get, for what he gives you around the training camp, the games he plays, everything he stands for. All of those things, you put that in a computer, his name will come out one of the top ones”, he told talkSPORT.

“Not best in terms of ability wise, I’m talking everything that a modern-day player should give you. Professionalism, how he conducts himself. I’ve never seen a bad word in the newsprint about James Milner.”

Could not disagree more

As incredible as James Milner has been during his time in the Premier League, for Stuart Pearce to even mention his name in any such ‘greatest ever player’ discussions is outrageous.

Simply put, there is a long list of players who have outperformed Milner and played a bigger part than him in the best sides to have ever played in the division.

Has the Englishman been underappreciated at various points of his career? Without a doubt.

But it can also be said that for chunks of his career, the 37-year-old has been a squad option at best, used as utility man at both Manchester City and Liverpool, two clubs where his career was at its best.
