Alvaro Pereira could be on his way to Turkey in January – after admitting a desire to play there.
One area in which Tottenham Hotspur did not, but perhaps should have, improved this summer gone was at left-back. With Benoit Assou-Ekotto out of favour and out on loan, Danny Rose injured and Jan Vertonghen continually peeved at having to play the wide role – it was certainly a position that needed to be looked at in the summer.
But other than the arrival of Zeki Fryers Spurs failed to address the situation – and recently found themselves wanting.
With that in mind many a name was linked with a move to Spurs in the January window – in order to fill that left-back gap.
One such name was Alvaro Pereira of Inter Milan.
The Uruguayan had worked with Andre Villas-Boas at FC Porto – and has not exactly enjoyed his time with Inter Milan since a €10 million switch in August 2012.
With that in mind he was considered available in January – and Spurs were the team heavily linked with his signature.
When AVB got the sack the other day – that almost certainly killed the hope he might be arriving to shore up those left-back problems in January, the fact he can play at right-back also makes him an excellent signing.
Now he has his eyes on a different destination. Pereira, speaking to Turkish radio station ‘RadyoSpor’, announced his hope of one day playing in Turkey – news that Besiktas, Fenerbahce, Trabzonspor and Galatasaray would be very pleased to hear:
“There’s the World Cup, I have to play a lot to earn my call. Turkey is a beautiful country, I’d like to play there.”
Seems that Tottenham will have to consider other options to solve their shortage of left-backs this season.
Tim Sherwood … Franco Baldini … over to you.
