Rangers are reportedly interested in George Edmundson.

Rangers are reportedly keen on a move for defender George Edmundson.

The Mail report Rangers’ first bid for the centre-back has been rejected by Oldham.

Edmundson, 21, is not a star name, and Rangers fans would be right to be sceptical.

Can he step up and handle the pressure at Ibrox?

It’s too early to know, but there is a low bar for Edmundson to prove an upgrade.

Rangers’ central defenders are Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic, but beyond that, options are thin.

Gareth McAuley of Rangers arrives prior to the Ladbrokes Premiership match between Livingston and Rangers at Tony Macaroni Arena on January 27, 2019 in Livingston, United Kingdom.

Joe Worrall is returning to Nottingham Forest, and Gareth McAuley will be released.

Rangers are likely to sign a more experienced defender than Edmundson, making the Oldham talent a potential replacement for McAuley.

It won’t take much for him to be an improvement on the veteran.

The Northern Ireland defender made only 10 appearances for the Gers this season, with fitness problems limiting his chances.

Edmundson is worth taking a gamble on, and Rangers would rather have a third or fourth option who is regularly available, than one who isn’t.
