John Brown could return to football after four years out of the game by being appointed at Rangers.
It’s fair to say Pedro Caixinha, a coach who spent more of his managerial career in Mexico and Qatar than the European game, remains something of a mystery to Rangers fans. A 4-0 battering of Hamilton in his first game in charge is a strong start but what the future holds is anyone’s guess.
Therefore, it makes sense for Caixinha to instil a connection between himself and the fans by adding a bonafide club legend to the dugout, as reported by the Scottish Sun.
Former Rangers defender John ‘Bomber’ Brown, who was part of the historic side who lifted nine consecutive league titles between 1989 and 1997, is in contention for a coaching role at Ibrox more than three years after his last job at Dundee.
And, just to make the 55-year-old even more popular in the eyes of Rangers supporters, he has been an outspoken critic of the board’s mismanagement in recent seasons. Clearly, Brown is a man with huge admiration for his club.
Who can forget his impassioned, 40 minute rant against previous owner Charles Green on the steps of Ibrox in 2012?
“How do we get them out? You starve them out — when the money runs dry,” Brown exclaimed in quotes reported by The Sun, urging fans to boycott season tickets.
“As long as you feed the animal, they will stay. You buy nothing. If you don’t put bums on seats, he has got nothing.”
A number of Rangers fans may express their concern that Brown has only worked in two coaching roles since retiring in 1997, totalling 175 games in charge of Clyde and Dundee, but he could be a galvanising influence at the club, repairing a chasm between the supporters and the management that was only widened by the divisive reign of Mark Warburton.
