Have Everton made a mistake allowing two centre-backs to leave this summer without replacing them?
With three days until they start their new season with a Premier League opener against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Everton have only two available centre-backs.
As things stand, Michael Keane and Phil Jagielka (who turns 36 on August 17) are set to start against Wolves with the only other option, Mason Holgate, injured during pre-season.
The Toffees have allowed two players in the position to leave this summer, with Ramiro Funes Mori joining Villarreal and Stoke City landing Ashley Williams on loan.
Yet despite new manager Marco Silva being determined to sign new defenders before the transfer deadline at 5pm tomorrow (August 9), no deals are imminent.
The Mirror reports that attempts have been made to sign Yerry Mina from Barcelona and Manchester United’s Marcos Rojo, but the Merseyside club have been unable to get either transfer over the line as yet with time running out.
With a little over 24 hours to go in the window, this has seen them turn their attention to Kurt Zouma of Chelsea in a potential loan move, but unless something changes quickly Silva could find himself having to call upon Tyias Browning and Matthew Pennington – who both were on loan in the Championship last term.
