Kevin Campbell has said on Stadium Astro that Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta should pick Emiliano Martinez ahead of Bernd Leno.

The former Arsenal striker rates Martinez highly, and he believes that the Argentine goalkeeper should be the first-choice goalkeeper.

Leno has been the number one between the posts, but injury to the German last season saw the 27-year-old get his chance.

The Argentine did well in the final weeks of last season and also played in the FA Community Shield against Liverpool at the weekend.

Campbell told Stadium Astro, as trancribed by Metro: “What I’ve seen from Martinez, I would go with Martinez, because I think he makes that defence a lot more settled. They don’t panic when he’s behind them. I’ve seen them panic when Leno’s there.”

The former Arsenal striker added: ‘This is a potential banana skin for Arsenal and Mikel Arteta. Martinez obviously has been at the club a long time, never really got his chance.

“Leno they brought him in, paid big money to Leverkusen, he’s come in and done fantastic. But at the end of last season when Martinez came in, he looked the part he performed. He’s now won two bits of silverware, Leno’s won no silverware.

“He’s made some key decisions, his handling is very good, he comes out and makes people feel comfortable from crosses.”

Big decision for Mikel Arteta

Martinez has been superb for Arsenal in recent times, and it would be harsh on him to drop him from the team.

The Argentine has looked very comfortable between the posts, has made some good saves, and has looked like a leader at the back.

However, Leno is a very good goalkeeper, and the German’s importance to the team and his performances before his injury should not be forgotten.

Arsenal head coach Arteta will have to make a big decision regarding which goalkeeper will be his number one next season.
