Dejan Lovren is being linked with a £25 million move away from Liverpool.
In terms of value for money, Liverpool might be about to strike a brilliant deal – and it isn’t an arrival, but a potential outgoing.
According to The Times, AC Milan want to sign Liverpool centre-back Dejan Lovren but the Reds won’t let him go for less than £25 million.
If that happens, sporting director Michael Edwards deserves his reputation as one of the best transfer gurus in the Premier League.
Lovren is better than many Liverpool fans gave him credit for only a couple of seasons ago, but he also turns 30 next month and £25 million would be an incredible bit of business by Edwards.
Bear in mind that the Anfield outfit signed him for £20 million, so to potentially make a £5 million profit on a player like Lovren can’t be anything other than a brilliant deal.
The Croatia defender, a beaten World Cup finalist last summer, is also Jurgen Klopp’s fourth-choice central defender. He is behind Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez in the pecking order.
When you put it all together, the former Southampton man is about to turn 30, has a history of being rather error-prone and is a squad player, and yet Liverpool could still wind up getting £25 million for him – a third of what they signed Van Dijk for 18 months ago.
If this goes through, the Merseysiders might not do a better deal this summer.
