Liverpool are reportedly keen on signing the Napoli defender.
When Liverpool signed Virgil van Dijk in January 2018, the Dutchman instantly transformed their defence into one of the best in Europe.
The Reds were quite simply brilliant in the Premier League last season, missing out on the title by only a single point to Manchester City, and conceding just 22 goals in the process.
Could they become even better defensively, however?
The answer to that question is yes, but it won’t be easy, or cheap.
Liverpool conceded sloppy goals against Leicester City and West Ham United last season, resulting in 1-1 draws, and had they kept clean sheets in those games, they would have finished three points clear of City.
So how do the Reds become even stronger at the back?
According to Italian media outlet Il Mattino, Liverpool are interested in signing Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly, and should Jurgen Klopp be successful in his pursuit of the Senegalese ace, it could be a real game-changer for the Merseyside outfit.
Standing at 6ft 5in tall, the 27-year-old is an imposing physical specimen, and the thought of him lining up alongside Van Dijk would be a really frightening one for opposing attackers.
The duo could forge a superbly strong partnership at the back for Liverpool, and would make them even stronger defensively than they were last season.
Il Mattino claims that he will cost somewhere in the region of £100 million, however, so the Reds would have to break the record for a defensive signing for the second time, if they are to bring the Senegal international to Anfield.
If Klopp can convince the Liverpool owners to part with that kind of cash, however, it might just turn out to be the signing that takes them to another level entirely next season.
