Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has praised central defender Cristian Romero for his impact this season.

Cristian Romero has played a big role in helping Tottenham Hotspur’s back line feel so comfortable this season.

That is the verdict of Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou, who has been speaking to SPURSPLAY after another victory.

Tottenham headed to Kenilworth Road on Saturday afternoon, seeking two pick up another three points against Luton Town.

Spurs dominated early on but just couldn’t find an opener before Yves Bissouma was sent off for two bookable offences.

Tottenham fans probably thought it just wasn’t going to be their day, but Micky van de Ven’s goal handed Spurs a 1-0 win in a truly battling performance.

Ange Postecogolou praises Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero

A key part of Tottenham’s victory was some pretty resilient defending to withstand Luton Town pressure.

Romero really stood out in that regard having shown himself as a real leader in Tottenham’s back line.

Romero racked up 12 clearances, five aerial duels, two tackles, three interceptions and one key pass as Spurs kept a clean sheet.

This was another fine performance from Romero, who has started the season very impressively under Postecoglou.

The Spurs boss has now praised Romero for an ‘outstanding’ display against Luton, noting that he has been ‘brilliant’ all season.

Postecoglou added that Romero’s presence in the back line is helping the likes of Guglielmo Vicario, Destiny Udogie, Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro settle into Premier League life.

“Yeah, he was outstanding and he has been all year and part of the reason why I think the rest of that back four and Vic have felt so comfortable,” said Postecoglou. “It’s Destiny’s first year in the Premier League, it’s Micky’s first year, Vic’s first year, Pedro is still just beginning his career and having a World Cup winner beside them, I just think it lets them feel that little bit stronger themselves. He’s been brilliant all year,” he added.

Romero maturing before our eyes

Romero had a pretty up-and-down season last term.

The 25-year-old won the World Cup with Argentina but clearly wasn’t at his best in the second half of last season.

We saw the worst of Romero at times; rash defending which ultimately put his side in real danger.

Spurs really needed Romero to step up this season, especially having rejected other clubs over the summer transfer window.

Postecoglou made a big call over the summer, making Romero a vice-captain at Tottenham.

Romero seems to have really kicked on with this new leadership role, and Tottenham are really reaping the rewards.
