Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has praised striker Dane Scarlett for his impressive displays in training.

Dane Scarlett has caught the eye of Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou during recent training sessions.

Tottenham were knocked out of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, losing on penalties to Fulham.

Micky van de Ven’s own goal put Tottenham behind before Richarlison levelled it up after the break.

Tottenham faltered in the shootout though as Davinson Sanchez had his spot-kick saved by Marek Rodak.

That’s one trophy out of the picture for Tottenham inside the first weeks of the season, which isn’t ideal.

Postecoglou simply had to rotate his side though in order to learn more about his new players.

One of those is Giovani Lo Celso, who was given a starting role with James Maddison rested on the bench.

Lo Celso didn’t impress though and was hooked at half time with Postecoglou sending on young striker Dane Scarlett in his place.

Scarlett wasn’t able to find a winner for Tottenham; one potential chance fell his way after Rodak saved a Manor Solomon strike but he just couldn’t react quickly enough to score.

Scarlett didn’t take a penalty in the shootout either as Tottenham bowed out of the Carabao Cup.

Tottenham must now make a decision on Scarlett’s future ahead of transfer deadline day.

There may be a real temptation to send the 19-year-old out on loan again for more experience this season.

Scarlett spent last season with Portsmouth and scored four times in 34 League One games.

The first loan spell can be tricky for any young player and the hopes are still high for Scarlett are shining in the Tottenham youth ranks.

Postecoglou will make that decision in the next 48 hours but he has offered some up some praise for the teenage striker.

Postecoglou told Football London that he feels Scarlett has been ‘really good’ in Tottenham training of late.

The Australian suggested that Scarlett was ‘bright’ when he came on against Fulham and a potential loan move will now be discussed with Postecoglou adamant that he has a long-term future at Tottenham.

“Yeah I thought he was bright when he came on. He has been really good for us in training, he’s working really hard,” said Postecoglou. “Look, I’ll sit down with Dane over the next couple of days and sort of chart a way forward for him. I really think he’s definitely got a future at our club and I really like his attributes as a striker.”

“It’s always a balance with young players, will they get enough game time because for him the next stage of development is to play. He played a fair few games last year and I think he’s improved as a player since then. I’ll make that decision over the next couple of days and sit down with him, but I certainly see him as a Tottenham player and a lot of that will depend on what else happens over the next two or three days,” he added.
