Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou is backing Micky van de Ven for a ‘really excellent’ future after arriving from Wolfsburg.

Ange Postecoglou is delighted to see Wolfsburg defender Micky van de Ven complete his move to Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs were in action against Barcelona on Tuesday evening as Postcoglou took charge of his final pre-season game of the summer.

Robert Lewandowski fired Barcelona ahead inside three minutes before an Oliver Skipp double had Tottenham in front.

Spurs fans were loving what they were seeing but it all fell apart in the final stages.

Ferran Torres, Ansu Fati and Abde Ezzalzouli all found the net to give Barcelona a 4-2 victory and the Joan Gamper Trophy.

Tottenham will need to tighten up defensively moving forward, even if this wasn’t necessarily Postecoglou’s first-choice back line.

Fortunately, Tottenham have defensive help coming in having completed the signing of Micky van de Ven on Tuesday.

Ange Posteocglou praises Tottenham new boy Micky van de Ven

Tottenham confirmed the arrival of Wolfsburg defender Van de Ven after weeks of speculation.

BBC Sport report that Tottenham are paying an initial £34million for Van de Ven, but the deal could go to £43million with add-ons.

Tottenham now have their left-sided centre back of the future and the 22-year-old should be a key part of Postecoglou’s plans moving forward.

Postecoglou has now commented on Van de Ven for the first time since his move to Tottenham went through.

Speaking to Football London, Postecoglou admitted that Van de Ven has been on the Tottenham radar for a while.

The Australian praised Van de Ven’s profile in terms of being a commanding, left-footed centre back with real ambition.

Postecoglou added that Tottenham have real belief that Van de Ven can be a ‘really excellent’ player moving forward, backing him for a huge future.

“Micky van de Ven we’ve been on to for a while. Just great profile for a centre-back particular for the way we want to play,” said Postecolgou. “Physically he’s quite commanding and he’s got a real presence about him. He’s a left-sided centre-back which helps in the structure of the team.”

“Really ambitious young man. He’s only had a year in the Bundesliga. He was at Volendam before that. It’s not like he was at a big club before that. He’s making strides and hopefully this jump is another one with which we see him really develop.”

“For us, he’s one not just for this year but for the long term that we felt can become a really important part of our team and will be a really excellent defender for us,” he added.
