HITC Sport understands Wigan line up move for Rochdale star
Rochdale’s Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Sheffield United’s Paul Coutts
Wigan Athletic are closing in on the signing of Rochdale wide man Nathaniel Mendez-Laing on a free transfer, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.
Mendez-Laing is a free agent later this summer after seeing out his contract at Rochdale and a number of clubs have been monitoring his situation and several weighed up a move for the player during the January transfer window.
The 25-year-old has impressed for Rochdale this season, making 49 appearances in all competitions, scoring 10 goals as Dale just missed out on making the League One play-offs.
Rochadale were keen to keep hold of Mendez-Laing, but it seems likely that the midfielder will be moving on when his contract expires next month.

Wigan are looking to rebuild their squad for next season after they suffered relegation back to League One this season following one season back in the Championship.
A number of players are expected to leave the DW Stadium over the summer and the club are keen to land as many of their top targets as soon as possible.
Mendez-Laing is viewed as one of Wigan’s top priorities in this summer’s transfer window and they see him as being a key addition to the side as they look to mount a bid for promotion back to the Championship next season.
