Watford defender Tommie Hoban is set to join Blackburn Rovers on loan, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Hoban started Tuesday’s EFL League Cup defeat to Gillingham, but he has yet to feature in the Premier League so far this term.

The 22-year-old missed the majority of last season after being sidelined for five months with hip and groin injuries and the influx of summer arrivals has pushed him down the pecking order in Walter Mazzarri’s plans at Vicarage Road.

Watford are happy to send Hoban out on loan so that he can get some valuable first-team action under his belt as he looks to regain match fitness.

A number of clubs have expressed an interest in the Republic of Ireland Under-21 international, but Blackburn have moved quickly to land the versatile defender on a season-long loan.

Hoban will help fill the void of replacing Shane Duffy at Ewood Park with Brighton closing in on the signing of the former Everton defender.

The former Arsenal trainee is highly-regarded at Watford after working his way through the academy to the first-team and he was handed a new deal last summer to keep him at Vicarage Road until 2019.

Hoban was integral in Watford’s promotion winning campaign in the Championship in the 2014/15 campaign and he has made over 50 appearances for the club.
