Swansea City have made an improved bid for Brentford midfielder Ryan Woods as they look to secure his signature, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

New Swansea boss Graham Potter has identified Woods as one of his top targets before the close of the transfer window as he looks to build a squad capable of challenging for promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Brentford rejected Swansea’s initial bid for Woods, but the Welsh club have come back with an improved offer of £6million plus add-ons in a bid to persuade Brentford to part company with the talented playmaker.

Woods has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the Championship since joining Brentford in 2015 from Shrewsbury Town.

Brentford's Ryan Woods beats Hull City's Jackson Irvine during the Sky Bet Championship match between Hull City and Brentford at KCOM Stadium on December 9, 2017 in Hull, England.

The 24-year-old has made over 120 appearances for the Bees and was named the club supporters’ player of the year last season.

Brentford are reluctant to lose such a key performer as Woods, but HITC Sport understands the player has indicated he is interested in making the move to South Wales.

Talks are at an advanced stage between both clubs and Swansea are optimistic of landing Woods as they look to bolster their midfield options after seeing the likes of Ki Sung-Yueng, Roque Mesa, Andy King, Renato Sanches and Leon Britton leave the club since the end of last season.
