HITC Sport understands Crystal Palace are set to sign former Blackburn defender.

Crystal Palace are poised to sign former Blackburn Rovers defender Chris Samba on a free transfer, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Palace boss Sam Allardyce is desperate to bolster his squad before the close of the transfer window and he has decided to take a chance on free agent Samba.

Samba is looking for a new club after being released by Greek side Panathanaikos earlier this month.

The 32-year-old has linked up with Palace for training so that Allardyce could have a look at him and sources have told HITC Sport that the Congo international has undergone a medical at Selhurst Park.

Allardyce is a big fan of Samba having worked with the giant defender while in charge of Blackburn and he sees him as an answer to his side’s defensive problems.

Allardyce has yet to win a Premier League game since taking charge of Palace and he has seen his side concede eight goals in their last four games to leave them in the bottom three.

If Samba comes through his medical okay he is expected to sign a short-term deal at Palace as the club look for reinforcements to bolster their survival bid.
