Rotherham United have missed out on signing Iceland’s Euro 2016 hero Kari Arnason after he agreed to join AC Omonoia Nicosia, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Championship strugglers Rotherham expressed an interest in bringing Arnason back to the club during this month’s transfer window as they look to bolster their squad.

Championship duo see bids rejected for defender

Arnason is a big fan favourite at Rotherham after making over 100 appearances in his three-year spell at the club, where he helped them win back-to-back promotions from League Two to the Championship.

The 34-year-old left Rotherham in 2015 and joined Swedish side Malmo, where he has spent the last two seasons.

Arnason, who can play in central defence or in midfield, impressed at Euro 2016 helping Iceland pull off one the biggest shocks in football history by knocking out England in the last 16.

Arnason has decided to reject the chance to return to play in England to make the move to Cyprus to be reunited with one of his former coaches at Plymouth, John Carver, who is head coach at AC Omonoia Nicosia.
