Former Sunderland defender Billy Jones is poised to join Rotherham United on a free transfer, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Jones is available on a free transfer after leaving Sunderland earlier this summer following the expiration of his contract at the Stadium of Light.

Full-back Jones joined Sunderland in the summer of 2014 from West Bromwich Albion and played for the club in the Premier League.

Sunderland have suffered back-to-back relegations in the last two seasons and a number of players have moved on in the wake of their demotion to League One.

Jones made 24 appearances in all competitions for Sunderland last season, but could not prevent them from suffering relegation and Rotherham are ready to offer him the chance to stay in the Championship.

Rotherham boss Paul Warne is keen to bolster his squad ahead of life back in the Championship next season and he sees Jones’ experience and versatility as a key addition to his side.

The 31-year-old boasts a wealth of experience having made over 480 first-team appearances in his career to date during spells at Crewe Alexandra, Preston North End, West Brom and Sunderland.

Jones is in line to become Rotherham’s fourth signing of the summer following the arrivals of Kyle Vassell, Clark Robertson and Zak Vyner.
