HITC Sport understands Reading midfielder is a target for Rangers.

Rangers are eyeing a move for highly-rated Reading midfielder Liam Kelly, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Rangers boss Mark Warburton is looking to bolster his midfield options at Ibrox and skilful play-maker Kelly has emerged on his radar.

Kelly is highly-regarded within the corridors of power at Madejski Stadium having come through the ranks to break into the first-team under Jaap Stam this season.

The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international has made three first-team appearances so far this season, including playing the full 90 minutes in the EFL Cup defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates.

The 20-year-old’s current deal expires next summer and although the club have indicated they plan to keep Kelly no new deal has been agreed as yet.

A number of clubs are understood to be monitoring Kelly’s contract situation with Rangers hoping to lure the midfielder north of the border.

Warburton is understood to be an admirer of Kelly with the ball-playing midfielder suiting the style of football that Warburton likes to play.

Reading would be loathe to lose academy product Kelly, but they risk losing the midfielder for minimal compensation due to cross-border regulations if he does not sign a new deal and ends up moving to Scotland.
