Preston North End have turned down a bid from Championship rivals Ipswich Town for Jordan Hugill, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Hugill is regarded as one of the best young forwards in the Championship after catching the eye for Preston this season.

The 24-year-old impressed at the weekend in the FA Cup defeat to Arsenal as he gave the Gunners defence one of their toughest examinations of the season.

Hughill has scored six goals in 27 appearances for Preston and his performances and progress have not gone unnoticed among other clubs.

Ipswich have struggled for goals this season and McCarthy has keeping tabs on Hugill for several weeks now.

McCarthy is looking to bolster his side’s attacking options during this month’s transfer window and he sees Hugill’s strength and hard-work ethic as bringing something new to his line-up.

Ipswich have firmed up their interest in Hugill by tabling a £1.5million bid for the former Port Vale forward which has been rejected by Preston.

Hugill is highly-regarded at Preston, rewarding for his progress with a new two-year deal in September, and the club are keen to keep hold of him this month.
