A host of Premier League and Championship clubs are set to watch Northampton Town goalkeeper Adam Smith in their EFL Cup third round clash with Manchester United at Sixfields this evening.

The 6ft 4in Northampton Town shot-stopper is widely regarded as one of the best young goalkeeper’s outside of the Premier League having been named as the best goalkeeper in the Football League and the PFA League 2 Team of the year at the end of last season.

He has found an amazing level of consistency to his game which saw him awarded man-of-the-match eight times last season as well as being voted Northampton’s player of the month for August and September this term.

His performances have not gone unnoticed by several clubs higher up the football pyramid and it is no secret that several clubs in the Premier League and Championship are keeping a watchful eye on him. Sources have told HITC Sport that the Cobblers turned down bids for their admired goalkeeper during the last transfer window.

Smith played a crucial role in Northampton’s title-winning promotion from League Two last season having finished the campaign with the highest number of clean sheets in the league (15). His outstanding contribution was recognised by his teammates as he won the Players’ Player’ of the Year award in his first season at the club.

Smith has continued his good form in League One with three clean sheets from the opening eight league matches and he has also excelled in the EFL Cup with the former Leicester City man producing a number of outstanding saves in Northampton’s triumphs against Barnsley and West Bromwich Albion.

The second round tie went to penalties with Smith making the decisive save to deny West Brom’s James Morrison in the shoot-out.

The Sunderland-born keeper communicates exceptionally well with his defence during play. His decision making, shot stopping, handling and distribution are areas where he is particularly strong.

Smith, who turns 24 in November, is in the best and most consistent form of his career and news that his contract expires at the end of this season has alerted a number of clubs.
