Middlesbrough and Cardiff City are ready to battle it out for Preston North End defender Greg Cunningham, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Cunningham has established himself as one of the most consistent defenders in the Championship after impressing in the past two seasons for Preston.

The 26-year-old has made 90 appearances for Preston since his arrival from Bristol City in the summer of 2015.

Cardiff have held a long-term interest in Cunningham with Bluebirds boss Neil Warnock earmarking him as one of his top transfer targets this summer.

However, Middlesbrough could now enter the race for Cunningham with new Boro boss Garry Monk considering his left-back options at the Riverside.

No.1 left-back George Friend has been linked with a possible move away from Middlesbrough this summer following their relegation from the Premier League and Cunningham has emerged as a possible replacement.

Preston are keen to keep hold of Cunningham with the Republic of Ireland international as he is a key member of Simon Grayson’s side.

Cunningham still has two years to run on his deal at Deepdale, but Preston are bracing themselves for offers from both Cardiff and Middlesbrough this summer.
