HITC Sport understands Marseille rival Norwich for defender.

Norwich City face a battle with French giants Marseille to sign Sporting Lisbon defender Marvin Zeegelaar, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Norwich have identified Dutch defender Zeegelaar as a replacement for Martin Olsson following his departure to Swansea City earlier this week.

The Canaries have held talks with Sporting Lisbon about a deal for Zeegelaar and were hopeful of a deal, but they now face competiton for his signature from Marseille.

Marseille are ready to offer Zeegelaar a move to the Stade Velodrome and Norwich could miss out on one of their top targets if they do not close a deal quickly for the defender.

Former Ajax youngster Zeegelaar has experience of playing in England before after a loan spell at Blackpool in the 2013/14 season, but he made only two appearances for the Seasiders.

Zeegelaar joined Sporting Lisbon from Rio Ave last January and after making 13 appearances in his debut season he has made 16 appearances so far this season, including five outings in the Champions League this term.

The attacking left-back has impressed for Sporting this season and he was rewarded for his fine form by winning his first call-up to the Dutch national team for the games against Belgium and Luxembourg.
