Former Manchester City and Motherwell defender Ellis Plummer is hoping to win a move to Macclesfield after linking up on trial, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Plummer is currently a free agent after leaving Motherwell at the end of last season.

The 24-year-old has been weighing up his options since leaving Motherwell and he is now hoping to win a deal at League Two Macclesfield.

Plummer was tipped for a big future at City after joining the club at the age of 11 from Stockport, but despite impressing for City’s youth sides he was unable to break into the star-studded first-team at the Etihad Stadium.

Plummer had a spell on loan at Oldham during the 2013/14 season before linking up with Scottish Premiership side St Mirren for the 2014/15 campaign.

The centre-back was released by City at the end of the 2016/17 season and he moved to Motherwell on a one-year deal.

Injuries blighted Plummer’s progress at Motherwell and he left the club after just one season at Fir Park.

Macclesfield boss Sol Campbell is looking to strengthen his defensive options as he looks to secure survival in League Two and he has handed Plummer a trial at Moss Rose.

Campebll and his coaching team are set to cast an eye over Plummer this week in training and if the defender impresses during his trial stint the former England youth international could be handed a short-term deal by the Silkmen.

Sol Campbell is presented as the new manager of Macclesfield Town during a press conference at Moss Rose Ground on November 29, 2018 in Macclesfield, England.
