Highly-rated Shrewsbury Town boss Paul Hurst is in the frame to succeed Mick McCarthy as Ipswich manager next season, HITC Sport understands.
Ipswich are beginning their search for a new manager after revealing last week that the long-serving McCarthy would be leaving Portman Road at the end of the season when his contract expires.
A whole host of names have been linked with replacing McCarthy, who has been in charge of Ipswich since 2012, and Hurst is thought to figure highly on the club’s wanted list.
Hurst is regarded as one of the brightest young coaches in the Football League after transforming Shrewsbury from relegation battlers to promotion contenders in one year.
Hurst has worked wonders at Shrewsbury, guiding the perennial strugglers from the depths of League One to the top of the table despite having one of the lowest budgets in the league.
Shrewsbury have flourished under Hurst’s guidance, and they are battling with pre-season favourites Wigan and Blackburn Rovers for automatic promotion to the Championship.
Hurst’s succcess at Shrewsbury has unsurprisingly brought him to the attention of clubs higher up the football pyramid and he has emerged on Ipswich’s radar to replace McCarthy next season.
Hurst has proven at Shrewsbury that he can turn around a club irrespective of the funds at his disposal and that makes him an attractive proposition to Ipswich.
