Huddersfield Town midfielder Jack Payne is set to join Oxford United on loan, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.
Payne is set to find himself well down the pecking order in David Wagner’s plans as he prepares his side for life in the Premier League.
Wagner is ready to let the diminutive attacker move on in search of regular first-team football as his chances will be limited at the John Smith’s Stadium.
A number of clubs have expressed an interest in taking Payne on loan, including Charlton Athletic, but Oxford are in pole position to land the former Tottenham youngster.
New Oxford boss Pep Clotet is understood to have played a big part in persuading Payne to snub interest from elsewhere to come play for him at the Kassam Stadium.
Payne joined Huddersfielder last summer on a free transfer from Southend United after seeing out his contract at Roots Hall.
The 22-year-old made 28 appearances in all competitions for Huddersfield last season, although only 10 of those came as starts in the Championship.
The skilful midfielder scored four goals and played his part in Huddersfield’s successful promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs.
However, with Wagner bringing a whole host of new signings in this summer Payne found himself fall way down the pecking order and the player is happy to go out and loan and play ahead of the new season.
