Monaco’s Malian defender Almamy Toure in action against RB Leipzig
Huddersfield Town have launched a bid for Monaco defender Almamy Toure, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.
Huddersfield boss David Wagner is looking to strengthen his squad during the January transfer window and has made defensive reinforcements one of his top priorities.
Huddersfield have the fourth worst defensive record in the Premier League and Wagner knows he needs to improve on that if they are to ensure they are not involved in a relegation battle in the second of the campaign.
The Terriers have conceded 32 goals so far this season, but still sit proudly in 11th spot in the table six points above the relegation dropzone.
Wagner is looking to bolster his defensive options and Toure has emerged on his radar as he can play at right-back or centre-back.
The 21-year-old has come through the ranks at Monaco and helped them win Ligue 1 last season.
Toure made his debut for Monaco in February 2015 and he has gone on to make 62 appearances for the Principality side, but he has found his first-team chances limited this campaign.
Huddersfield have firmed up their interest by making a €14million (£12.4m) offer to Monaco for Toure as they look to lure him to England next month.
It remains to be seen if Monaco will accept the offer for Toure, but Monaco out of Europe following a disastrous Champions League campaign they could find it difficult to turn down Huddersfield’s offer for the defender.
