John Hartson is a contender for the vacant manager’s job at former club Coventry City, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

League One strugglers Coventry are searching for a new manager with Mark Venus currently in interim charge of the Sky Blues.

Venus has been carrying out the interim manager’s role at Coventry since Tony Mowbray left the role in September following a poor start to the season, but Venus is looking to quit his role so that he can take a position upstairs at the Ricoh Arena and the club are looking at possible candidates.

Coventry made an approach for former Queens Park Rangers and Burton Albion boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, but the Dutchman rejected their overtures meaning Coventry are now exploring other options.

Hartson is now in the frame for the Coventry job as he considers taking his first role as a manager having enjoyed spells coaching with Newport and Wales.

The 41-year-old worked as Wales’ assistant manager under Chris Coleman for a couple of years before quitting for personal reasons in 2013 and is currently forwards coach for the national team.

Hartson enjoyed half a season at Coventry during his playing career scoring six goals in 12 games before joining Celtic in a £6 million deal.

Coventry are languishing in 21st spot in League One, having lost their last five games and they are set to speak to several candidates including Hartson.
