Former Sheffield Wednesday and Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Dave Jones is set to be named as the new manager of League Two strugglers Hartlepool United, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Hartlepool sacked Craig Hignett as manager last weekend just 24 hours after their defeat to Crawley Town, following less than a year in charge of the club.

Hartlepool are currently languishing in 19th spot in League Two just four points above the drop zone.

A number of names have been linked with the Hartlepool vacancy, but Jones has emerged as the club’s top choice to replace Hignett to try to lift them clear of trouble at the wrong end of the table.

Jones has been out of work since leaving Sheffield Wednesday in 2013, but the 60-year-old boasts a wealth of managerial experience after spells at Stockport County, Southampton, Wolves and Cardiff.

Jones has won promotion three times in his career with Stockport, Wolves and Sheffield Wednesday, while he also guided Cardiff to the final of the 2008 FA Cup final only to lose to Portsmouth.
