Birmingham City striker James Vaughan was poised to join Championship rivals Burton Albion, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club, but Bury have since moved to attempt to hijack the deal.

Vaughan has found his first-team chances at Birmingham limited so far this season, making just one appearance in the EFL Cup defeat to Oxford.

The former Everton youngster has slipped down the pecking order in Gary Rowett’s plans with the arrival of Greg Stewart from Dundee and the emergence of Jack Storer increasing competition for places at St Andrew’s.

Vaughan joined Birmingham initially on loan from Huddersfield last November before making the move permanent, but he failed to score in 16 appearances.

Vaughan began his career as a trainee at Everton, with loans at Derby, Leicester and Crystal Palace, before signing for Norwich City in a £2.5m deal in 2011.

Huddersfield signed him for £1m in 2013 and he made over 50 appearances for the Terriers, scoring 19 goals.

Burton boss Nigel Clough is keen to bolster his squad before the close of the transfer window and he sees Vaughan as being a valuable addition to his squad as they look to secure survival in the Championship.
