Bristol City are closing in on the signing of Preston North End defender Bailey Wright, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Bristol City are in the market for a new left-sided centre-half and Wright has emerged as the club’s top target.

Wright is in the final six months of his contract at Preston and he has yet to agree a new deal at Deepdale.

A number of clubs have been monitoring Wright’s situation at Preston, but Bristol City are hoping to steal a march on their rivals by setting up a deal for the defender.

Preston are reluctant to lose Wright, but they could decide to cash-in on him this month rather than risk allowing him to run down his contract.

Wright has impressed for Preston since joining the club in 2009 after being spotted playing in his native Australia.

Despite being only 24 Wright has made over 200 appearances for Preston and was part of Australia’s squad for the 2014 World Cup.

Bristol City boss Lee Johnson is desperate to bolster his squad this month having lost nine of their last 10 games and he sees Wright as being a key addition to his side.
