Newly-appointed Birmingham boss Gianfranco Zola has been busy in this month’s transfer window bringing in four new signings and he is looking to make Frei his latest new arrival.

Frei has found himself down the pecking order at Besiktas this season, making just nine appearances for the Turkish Super Lig side this term.
Zola has made a new winger one of his top priorities this month and Frei has emerged as the Italian’s top target.

Frei has experience of playing in England before after spending three years with Fulham between 2010-13 before moving to Turkey with Besiktas.
The 23-year-old, who joined Fulham from Grasshopper in Switzerland, made 33 appearances in toal for Fulham with 23 coming in the Premier League, scoring one goal .
Birmingham are in advanced talks with Besiktas about a permanent deal for Frei and the club are confident of securing a deal to bring him to St Andrew’s.
Frei is now in line to become Birmingham’s fifth signing of the month following the arrivals of Lukas Jutkiewicz, Craig Gardner, Emilio Nsue and Cheick Keita.
